The Festival euro-scene Leipzig was founded in 1991 and is to date the only festival in the new federal states for modern theatre and contemporary dancing. Meanwhile the Festival is at the forefront of all the overlapping categories of avant-garde theatre festivals in Europe.

Parallel to the festival program numerous supporting events will be presented, adding depth to the themes of the Festival in the form of information and discussion events. The whole program allows for intensive confrontation with present trends in the young European theatre. The new productions which are largely unknown thereby provide an authentic reflection of the social and cultural processes in the countries participating. The twelfth euro-scene 2002 will be held from 12th-17th November 2002 and focuses particularly on the Belgian theatre scene - it being a melting pot of European culture. In 21 performances 13 productions from Belgium and various western and eastern European countries at eight locations examine the subject "Roots and Visions", thus tracking down a thesis: "The contemporary theatre lives from the social visions, which it develops and presents artistically, and it also lives from the cultural roots, tracking them down inquiringly." The theatre is the room for sensual, artistic visions of society, the imagination knows no bounds. Therefore art can be understood in the role of past life, outlining new models for living together, which afterwards will be put in the cycle of tests.
