Prague Theater Festival in the German language 2004
An initiative of the Allianz Kulturstiftung in cooperation with Prager Theaterfestival Deutscher Sprache.
The Prague Theater Festival in the German language began in 1996 under the name "Deutsches Theater Prag" in order to revive the tradition of international coexistence and the mutual enrichment of the Czech, German and Jewish culture in the Czech capital which had been violently interrupted.

Not only the directors of four important theatres in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and the director of the Theater in den Weinbergen in Prague picked up this initiative but also the presidents of the four countries participating, who together shoulder to shoulder with the city of Prague undertook the patronage for the Festival from the beginning. This year's foreign opening play will be performed by the Bayerische Staatssschauspiel Munich with "Onkel Wanja" by Anton Tschechov. The director Barbara Frey is producing this famous play of the Russian classical theater in a dramatization not adhering to tradition which emphasizes the humorous elements of the text effortlessly and can change the tragedy into comedy through particular snapshots. In addition to that, the Berliner Ensemble, the Burgtheater Vienna (with the play "Das Werk" by Elfriede Jelinek this year's Nobel prizewinner for literature) and the Theater Basel will be presented.

Prizewinner of this year's "Max" contest which has been awarded by the theatre management in cooperation with the Allianz Kulturstiftung since 2002 and honours the best performance of a play in the Czech Republic in the original German language, is "Die Arabische Nacht" produced by Roland Schimmelpfennig of the Reichenberger Theater "F.X.Saldy" under the direction of Martin Tich. The prize will be awarded prior to the performance on 25.10.2004.
