Based on the success of the curatorial workshops held in relation to the 4th and 5th Berlin Biennale, KW Institute for Contemporary Art supported by the Goethe-Institut Munich, the Allianz Cultural Foundation, and BMW took the 6th Berlin Biennale as an occasion to once again strengthen the initiative of young curators by organizing a workshop for 10-12 young, international aspirants of this field.

The curatorial workshop "Real Players" took place around the opening days of the 6th Berlin Biennale in the beginning of June 2010. Consisting of ten days of seminars and debates as well as exhibition and studio visits, it aimed at enhancing the young curators' professional development. The previous editions had seen such renowned key speakers as: Ute Meta Bauer, René Block, Iara Boubnova, Ann Demeester, Okwui Enwezor, Charles Esche, Jens Hoffmann, Vasif Kortun, Maria Lind, Chus Martínez, Mark Nash, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Anton Vidokle, and WHW. The extraordinary workshop program gave the young participants from around the world a unique opportunity to exchange ideas with leading curators at close hand.

The curatorial workshop of 2010 elaborated closely on topics and questions of this year’s biennial edition. It provided the young participants with an exclusive look 'behind the scenes' of the 6th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art as well as gave insights into the current art production of Berlin.

All participants carried initial curatorial experience, were fluent in English, not older than 35years, and were chosen on the basis of an official application sent to the selection committee: Gabriele Horn (Director, KW Institute for Contemporary Art / Berlin Biennale), Kathrin Rhomberg (Curator, 6th Berlin Biennale), Eva Schmitt (Department of Visual Arts, Goethe-Institut), Michael Thoss (Managing Director, Allianz Cultural Foundation), Ana Janevski (Curatorial management, Curatorial Workshop).
The berlin biennial has established itself as an open space that experiments, identifies and critically examines the latest trends in the art world. The innovative character of this "art lab", which tries and tests the greenest shoots in the art world is to be expanded, with the particular aim of giving young artists the opportunity to introduce themselves to broad sections of the public.
Although the exhibition has an essentially public character, it also has an inner forum in which event organisers, artists, curators, selected critics, cooperation partners, sponsors and promotors commit to the advancement of this association work at shaping the exhibition and its seismographic interpretation of current cultural and social developments.

Project period: June 5.-15., 2010
