Anikó Loránt: Das Dach, Sie verläßt das Haus nicht, aber sie entdeckt dennoch die Welt, 2005. drawing on school board

The New Berlin Art Association continues its ongoing exploration of Central Eastern European contemporary art in this exhibition. In view of the EU integration of eastern neighboring states completed two years ago, it has become increasingly urgent to overcome the cultural consequences of a long political separation and move beyond the existing relationship of center and periphery within European cultural life.

The title of the exhibition is a metaphor for the current reception of Hungarian art: In order to be taken seriously, it has to be presented appropriately and prominently. The attribute "contemporary art" in the subtitle refers to the selection of artists for the exhibition, who have only been active as artists since the collapse of Communism.

The exhibition attempts to highlight a number of prevailing trends. One of its specific features is opening up the private sphere in the direction of "public space", the extension of communication from the reclusiveness of the studio to the social harmony of ideas and practical expression.
