Utopia Station Lab / museum in progress
The concept for the project "Utopia Station Lab", planned to last several years, arose from a cooperation between the art historian Molly Nesbitt, the curator Hans Ulrich Obrist, the artist Rirkrit Tiravanija and the Vienna Art Society museum in progress.

The interdisciplinary discourse and performance platform will be presented for the first time to the general public as a pilot project during the exhibition "Utopia Station" at the 50th Art Biennial in Venice from June to November, 2003. In the wake of preceding intensive research work on the subject "Utopia" - on the relevance of the term in the present discourse and possible forms of contemporary utopias - an open dialogue developed in numerous workshops and talks between representatives of quite diverse disciplines. The exhibition "Utopia Station" documents the results of the preceding discussions, but beyond that wants to create a meeting place, another "station" for a continuing dialogue, which is open to a maximum number of participants. Accordingly a central aspect of the project is a diverse programme of events which under the title "Utopia Station Lab / museum in progress" should liven up the place where the exhibition is held and should contribute to relocate the communicative process before the general public.
In the medium term a new exhibition format will be developed in the way the museum in progress practices. This expands the presentations and actions taking place locally in the communications room of the media and in this way integrates contemporary art into the social workday. The artistic contributions, which are realized on hoardings within the town precincts of Venice as well as in internationally renowned European print media are integrative components of the exhibition which subsequently will be shown in other places and at the same time will be continually replenished.
In September 2003 the platform "Utopia Station Lab / museum in progress" will be continued with a poster project and discussion events in the Haus der Kunst in Munich (more information can be found here). In autumn 2004 the whole exhibition can be seen there together with the additional contributions so far. A further station is in San Sebastian during the exhibition Manifesta 5.
