Residency Exchange Program (REX)
The REX Project supplements studio residencies for artists with a phase of intercultural exchange and public presentation. A collaborative initiative of the art centers WIELS in Brussels, HALLE 14 in Leipzig, and MAUMAUS in Lisbon, in association with the Allianz Cultural Foundation.
Altogether six cultural institutions from Brussels, Lisbon, Istanbul, Bristol, Vilnius, and Leipzig are participating in the European artists-in-residence program. In the case of WIELS, HALLE 14, and MAUMAUS, three of the participating art centers will add new components to the artists’ studio residencies. Following their stays of several weeks, in conjunction with the residency program at one of the three participating institutions, grant recipients will also be guests for a few weeks at one of the other partner organizations. Here they will be well looked after and given the opportunity to reflect on their residency, gain insight into the host country’s art and culture, and become acquainted with a second institution and its associations. At the close of a year cycle, selected recipients from all the participating institutions take part in an international workshop, where they exchange experiences and residency results, make new contacts and present their completed work to the public.
Created with the help of REX is a network of personal relationships and artistic experiences sophisticated enough to be crucial for the individual grant recipients on the road to artistic professionalism as well as the connection to European and international culture. In this way, intercultural exchange is intensified and further support given to sustaining cultural diversity.
WIELS in Brussels, HALLE 14 in Leipzig, and MAUMAUS in Lisbon are in charge of this project. Additional institutions will be integrated at a later date. The first international, concluding workshop will be held in WIELS – Centre d’art contemporain in Brussels.
